Ohio police remove alligator living in man's basement for 25 years
By Robert Gearty | Fox News - February 29, 2020
Police were recently called to an Ohio home to remove a large alligator that had been living in the basement for 25 years.
Ohio police see a lot but rarely, if ever, do they encounter an alligator, especially one measuring 5 feet, Fox 28 Columbus reported.
“I’ve been a police officer 17 years, and I’ve never come across an alligator,” Madison Township Patrol Commander Darrel Breneman told the station.
Breneman said police got a call Friday from paramedics saying they had just responded to a home in Groveport and they could not believe what they saw in the basement, the station reported.
The alligator was living in a tub-like structure with water and a sump pump.
Its owner Dusty Rhoades told WBNS-TV that he got Alli at a reptile flea market.
“I just got him when he was about a foot long. I've had him ever since," he said.
Rhoades was in possession of the alligator without an exotic animal permit but avoided being cited after agreeing to voluntarily surrender the alligator to state wildlife officials, Fox 28 reported.
The alligator was checked out and found to be in average health for an alligator living in captivity, according to the station.
Alli will eventually have a new home at an alligator sanctuary in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
“They kind of grow to the size of the enclosure that they're in, so he's not reached his full potential, and I think it's pretty exciting to know that he's going to an alligator sanctuary in a warmer climate where he can reach his full potential and experience that,” Breneman told the station.

Florida alligator attack leaves woman with 'significant bite injuries,' officials say
By Travis Fedschun | Fox News – May 25, 2019
A woman in Florida had to be airlifted to the hospital after being bitten during an alligator attack on Saturday, according to officials.
Brevard County Fire Rescue said on Twitter the incident happened in the area west of Fay Lake Wilderness Park in Port Saint John, located between Titusville and Cocoa.
Fire officials said the woman suffered "significant bite injuries," and had to be flown to an area trauma center.
Witnesses told FOX35 the woman was wounded on her side and thigh. Officials told the television station that her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), alligators begin courting in early April and mate in May or June.
Aside from roaming farther from their lagoons, warmer temperatures also rev up alligators’ metabolism, making them more active and aggressive as they hunt for prey and mate.
Alligators and dinosaurs may have more in common than we think
Alligators and dinosaurs are found to both have the ability to hear according to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
The FWC recommends not swimming during dusk or dawn — an alligator’s most active hours — keeping animals on a leash and away from water and keeping a safe distance if they come into contact with the large creature.
FWC officials told FOX35 that the gator in Saturday's incident will now have to be removed and euthanized.
Fox News' Ann W. Schmidt and Allie Raffa contributed to this report.

Florida officials capture 6-foot alligator outside of school
By Madeline Farber | Fox News – March 06, 2019
Deputies with the St. John’s County Sheriff’s Office as well as officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) worked to capture the alligator that was first spotted in a pond near Palm Valley Academy school’s campus last week. (St. Johns County Sheriff's Office)
A 6-foot alligator was captured outside a school in St. John’s County, Fla., this week, police said.
A trap was subsequently set out for the reptile. On Monday, officials were informed the gator had entered the trap.
“The Palm Valley Academy school mascot is a bobcat, not a gator... so when they noticed this big guy hanging out in the pond nearby they called for help! Deputies and some trappers came by to help this 6-foot gator find a new home safely!” the sheriff’s office later wrote on Facebook.
“Too close for comfort,” one woman wrote in response.
“Thanks for keeping the kids safe from this big guy,” a second commented.
“Guess he wanted to go to school too!” another joked.
It’s not clear where the alligator was taken following its removal.

Alligator in Florida catches golf ball in mouth during tournament: 'It saved me from a hazard penalty'
By Madeline Farber | Fox News – February 27, 2019
An alligator in Florida put a new spin on the meaning of a hole-in-one.
Joanne and Len Sadowsky were competing in a couples golf competition at the Bonita National Golf Club in Bonita Springs on Saturday when Joanne claimed a gator “jumped up and caught” her wayward ball.
“I shanked the ball to the right, and it was heading to the water,” she told the Naples Daily News. “It was close to the gator’s head. He saw it, jumped up and caught it.”
A photo provided to the publication shows the gator resting with the woman’s light pink ball in its mouth.
While the Bonita Springs resident is accustomed to seeing gators on the course, this was the first time she’s ever witnessed such an event.
“We’ve seen them with a fish or a turtle in their mouths, but never a golf ball,” she said.
The unexpected occurrence played into Joanne’s favor, however.
“It saved me from a hazard penalty,” she said, noting she earned a free drop due to the interference.
